Giant Wave Kills Tourist & Critically Injures Companion While Walking on Cabo Beach, Video
Tragedy struck as a giant wave killed a tourist and critically injured another while they were strolling on a beach in the Pacific resort of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Tuesday.
A 65-year-old woman died after a wave struck her and her 70-year-old male companion on a beach when they were heading back to their hotel, according to The Associated Press. The man is still listed in serious condition as of Wednesday.
The under-toe of the water allegedly pulled the two out to sea where they were later rescued by a Navy officer, but by that time the woman was already declared brain dead.
The respective tragedy is the second incident where someone was killed by a potent wave in the past five months. In December, two fishermen were pulled into the San Francisco Bay by a wave and both were later found dead, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Authorities have yet to identify the woman who was killed by the wave but she did have a driver's license from Wisconsin. The man was said to possess a Nebraska driver's license, but it still isn't certain whether or not the victims' family members have been contacted.
Numerous beaches are known for having large waves. The book 100 Best Surf Spots in The World, said Cabo waves are known to be fairly gentle compared to ones in other locations.
"At the other end of the scale is the big surf of Cabo San Lucas at Todos Santos, where the wave can turn into huge gun barrels, glistening steel in the noonday sun and striking awe into the township that overlooks the bay," the book said. "When a mighty swell hits, the big-wave riders get out their guns and face the pounding shorebreak eye to eye. It's a shoot-out with some of the most powerful waves in the world."
