Authorities seized 36 Chihuahas in Watsonville, Santa Cruz COunty, California earlier this week in a "hoarding" case and will now take the dogs to foster homes, according to the Mercurynews.com.

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officials in California seized eleven Chihuahas from an apartment, and 25 Chihuahas from a second house in Watsonville. Out of the 36 Chihuahas, 16 were puppies.

"It's a hoarding case first because not only were animals being hoarded, but also objects and possessions," the shelter's field services manager Todd Stosuy told the paper. He also said "the dogs were indiscriminately breeding in the house."

The dogs are currently at two shelter locations and the shelter is looking for families who can adopt the dogs, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Officials said they are investigating if neglect charges should be filed against the people who kept the dogs.

The investigation occurred after the landlord of one of the residences called concerned that no one was taking care of the Chihuahas.
