A five-year-old Pitbull, Babe, was stung to death by a swarm of bees in North Hollywood on March 16, after a neighbor cut down a tree where the hive was inside.

The Los Angeles Fire Department sprayed foam on the tree to kill as many bees as possible, according to KTLA.

The man who cut the tree fled and children who were playing nearby were unharmed.

A neighbor said to the station, "We've all got kids and dogs. Luckily they didn't hurt any kids, but it's terrible they hurt a dog."

The owners of the dog, who also have young children, didn't speak on camera but said they never expected something like this to happen.

An exterminator also sprayed the tree and told the station that as long as the tree has honey, the bees will keep coming back. It is unknown whether the bees were the aggressive Africanized honey bees.

According to The Los Angeles Times, 16 dogs from a pet boarding center were attacked by a swarm of what was reported to be Africanized bees in June 2012.

The dogs were in an exercise yard when the swarm attacked them and the employees. Three dogs were hospitalized, and two of them (whippets) were stung more than 250 times.
