David Schwimmer, who plays Robert Kardashian in FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson, spoke about how the trial had such a profound impact on the attorney.

The latest episode of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson focuses primarily on the jury selected for the O.J. Simpson murder trial, but it also features many heartbreaking Kardashian scenes. Through the course of the episode, Kardashian gradually comes to realize that Simpson, his longtime friend, very likely committed the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

The most dramatic scene of the episode was between Kardashian and ex-wife Kris Kardashian (Selma Blair), with Robert breaking down and realizing he was in a tough situation, since quitting the case would have a negative impact on all of his loved ones.

Schwimmer spoke with The Hollywood Reporter recently about how the real-life Kardashian felt at the time, upon making this heartbreaking revelation.

"I think it changed him profoundly in probably every way. This is just my guess, but he never really recovered after that trial," Schwimmer said. "His health deteriorated, it ruined the new romantic relationship he was in. It affected him profoundly. We'll never really know, but I certainly made the choice as an actor and with the writers that the trial had a devastating effect on Robert and he's actually kind of a tragic figure. He's someone who was dealt a really bad blow by the entire ordeal and then not too much longer afterwards we lost him."

Additionally, Schwimmer discussed the irony of Kardashian's children becoming internationally famous so many years later and how it's ultimately an ironic twist of fate.

"It's ironic given how seemingly private Robert was. It is ironic that his offspring became internationally famous," he explained. "It's also interesting that his celebrity was totally accidental and unintentional. It was inadvertently thrust into every household in America and it's not something he pursued or even enjoyed. But who really knows? I don't."
