Dame Zaha Hadid, one of the most noteworthy architects in the world, has died at age 65. Hadid was being treated for bronchitis at a Miami hospital where she died on Thursday of a heart attack.

Hadid won a Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects this year, where she spoke about the importance of female architects:

"We now see more established female architects all the time," she said. "That doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes the challenges are immense. There has been tremendous change over recent years and we will continue this progress."

Hadid was born on Oct. 31, 1950 in Baghdad, Iraq. She studied at the American University of Beirut before transferring to the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Hadid designed the London Acquatics Centre, which served as the location for the Olympics and Paralymics in 2014.
