Mexico City was hit by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake Tuesday morning followed by another 5.1 earthquake that scattered people in the streets in fear.

The magnitude figures are the latest records provided by the U.S. Geological Survey at the time of writing. Earlier, the figures were higher at 5.9 and 5.4 respectively.

Mexico City's Government said there were no damages or deaths, but people evacuated office buildings and schools. The two earthquakes struck the city one right after the other at 7:04 am and 7:12 am respectively. The epicenter was in the Southwestern state of Oaxaca.

Mexico City's airport was operating regularly on Tuesday.

"Now I understand why I woke up here in Mexico at 7:04. The earthquake was a magnitude 5.4 and I could feel it. Everything is well in DF," Twitter user Andres Cantor wrote early today.

"Mexico woke up to an earthquake, I hope that there is nobody injured or severe damages. It doesn't matter the magnitude, it always feels awful," Twitter user Mauricio Martinez wrote.
