Doritos Locos Tacos Chips: Popular Fast Food Meal Available As Chips on April 8
Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Tacos, which have taken the fast food world by storm, will be available in chip form on April 8th, according to Doritos' Facebook page. Taco Bell sold 100 million Doritos Locos Tacos less than 10 weeks after debuting them in March of 2012.
The Locos Tacos are only slightly different from the everyday taco in that the shell is made from Doritos nacho cheese chips. Each bag of Locos Tacos chips will contain both taco-flavored chips as well as standard Doritos, in order to simulate the taste of Taco Bell's prized offering.
Doritos is offering fans of the Locos Tacos to participate in a Twitter contest that will land the winner 66 bags of Nacho Cheese Locos Tacos chips and another 66 bags of Cool Ranch. Earlier this year, Taco Bell rolled out Cool Ranch tacos with the slogan "Collect All Two."
The entire concept of these taco and Dorito combinations may be bizarre but the product has not only generated serious revenue, it has created jobs, according to ABC News. Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed told The Daily Beast that the company added 15,000 new employees last year, and he credits the Locos Tacos for that spike.
He called last March's unveiling the "biggest launch in Taco Bell History" and he's probably right. About one million Locos Tacos are consumed every day. Creed also said he believes the windfall will allow 2,000 new Taco Bell restaurants to be up and running within the next 10 years.
Matthew Ong, a retail analyst for Nerdwallet.com, said, "While I can't independently verify the veracity of Taco Bell's stated numbers, the volume of jobs created is possible due to Taco Bell's existing infrastructure. Having a solid internal organization allows a company like Taco Bell to quickly scale up operations when it does hit upon a fantastic product like Doritos Locos Tacos."
