This Ink Master contestant is making a much bigger name for himself this season than he did before.

On Monday, Richmond Magazine released details from contestant Jesse Smith who was on the show in the second season. But it didn't go well when the portrait challenge came up and there was not much of a positive impression on his black and grey portrait. But this only pushed him to work harder as he returned to the series for the seventh season.

"Because of the fact that I didn't know how to do a portrait last time, I've focused and paid a lot of attention to portraits since then," Smith said. "It just helps you grow as an artist. It kind of knocks you off kilter, humbles you a bit."

The tattoo artist then pointed out how he wasn't too memorable his first time on the show. This is because he stayed away from the drama, and of course, that doesn't do too well for the artists who want to be recognized.

"I realized last season a lot of people didn't remember me because I didn't really talk that much," Smith explained. "If you're not in the drama, you don't get on camera. If you're not on camera, nobody remembers you."

One of the artist's clients opened up on the unique talent that Smith has and how he's not afraid of taking on something potentially difficult.

"What's pretty cool with him is that if you challenge him, it's amazing how he'll accept it," Ben Grigsby said about Smith. "Jesse puts a twist to things. It's his version, and it's creative. He's traditional, but it's 'Jesse Smith traditional.'"

Ink Master airs on Tuesdays at 11 p.m. ET on Spike TV.
