John Mayer opened up for the first time about his recent split from songstress Katy Perry.

Mayer spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about the breakup on Tuesday's episode of Ellen. In the chat, the Shadow Days singer admitted that dating isn't easy.

"It was a very private relationship going in," the 35-year-old singer told the daytime talk show host. "It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship, still. I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other."

"I've been much happier since then. I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing," he added.

Perry, 28, and Mayer ended their relationship for the second time in mid-March after they dated last summer, cooled off in August and reconciled in September. According to sources, the second split may be temporary.

"It's sad," an insider told Us Weekly while adding that "it's not over until it's over." The couple are just taking a break and are waiting to "see how things play out."

Mayer recently recovered from battling throat issues- he had granuloma, an inflammation of tissue on his vocal chords. The botox treatment he underwent, an alternative to surgery, required him to go on vocal rest for two years.

Mayer announced his first tour in three years after taking a hiatus on March 22 after he recovered from the illness. He is set to go on the road and perform in more than 40 shows in four countries beginning next month. The tour will kick off April 25 in Tuscaloosa's Amphitheater and end in October at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl.
