The official teaser trailer for the upcoming Future Trunks arc in Dragon Ball Super has been released, and from what could be seen in the brief clip's content, it would seem like the next episodes of the popular anime's newest series would be the most intense one yet.

Since series creator Akira Toriyama teased fans with images of Future Trunks and the existence of an enemy known as Black Goku, fans have been speculating about the possible directions that the plot of the anime might take. Numerous rumors emerged, with some stating that the upcoming arc would be the darkest Dragon Ball story to date.

Though a dark storyline seems out of character for the current tone of Dragon Ball Super, the content of Episode 47's teaser trailer seems to suggest just that. Starting from a post-apocalyptic scenario and drawn with somber colors, Future Trunks' world has never looked so grim and hopeless.

It was not just the setting that invoked a significant degree of darkness, however, as other scenes featured in the trailer showed Trunks breaking down and crying, as well as a scene with Mai that appears to be set in a hidden location. The trailer also featured a very battered Trunks fighting against an enemy that could only be Black Goku, and from what could be seen from the teaser, Black Goku is as evil as they come.

What's particularly notable was the fact that in the entire teaser, no other people were shown except Trunks, his mother Bulma and Mai, his significant other. Considering that there were practically no buildings left standing in the landscape, is it then possible that Black Goku, during his reign of terror, committed genocide?

While such a dark turn of events seems out of character for a franchise such as Dragon Ball yet again, it has to be noted that just a few weeks ago, a serious arc from Dragon Ball Super seemed impossible as well. Indeed, with the vanilla shounen action that Dragon Ball Super has been adopting since it began, the grim introduction to the Future Trunks arc is a definite surprise.

The official start of the new Dragon Ball Super arc is set to begin this coming Sunday, June 12.
