Texas Plant Explosion VIDEO, PHOTOS: Up to 15 Dead and 160 Injured, Including Firefighters, Paramedics
A huge explosion rocked a small town in Texas Wednesday night, leaving up to 15 dead and over 160 people injured. The fertilizer plant in West exploded with a force of an earthquake, shooting fire and embers into the sky.
The ground was shaken with the force of a magnitude 2.1 earthquake, and residents from as far as 45 miles away felt the blast.
The explosion is believed to be a tragic industrial accident which first started off as a blaze.
Up to six volunteer firefighters are unaccounted for as they tried to dampen the initial fire. Among the dead are believed to be two paramedics at the scene, according to WFAA-TV.
One of the firefighters is believed to be at a hospital.
The fire first started around 7:29 p.m.. CT, when emergency teams responded to the scene of the fire. 24 minutes later, the plant exploded. Firefighters, police officers and paramedics were part of the emergency team that tried to clear the area before it exploded.
"The injuries that we are seeing are very serious,'' said Glenn Robinson, CEO of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, according to USA Today. "There are a number of patients that will be going to surgery ... It's a very, very unfortunate situation.''
The scene of the explosion looked like it had been bombed. Over 50 houses were damaged, including a middle school.
Residents have been urged to stay indoors in case chemical fumes are polluting the area and over half the town has been evacuated due to the dangerous fumes.
