Katie Ledecky, who recently won gold at the Rio Olympics and held the title of American Swimmer of the Year for three years, could be a millionaire a couple times over, but due to her decision to attend Stanford University, she has reportedly lost out on a great deal of money.

While Ledecky is doing alright for herself as she continues to further her education, a recent report has broken down her finances, revealing what she would be worth had she gone pro.

"The Katie Ledecky net worth total of $68,000 could be as high as $2.2 million if she’d gone pro instead of choosing to swim for Stanford University," Money Nation revealed to readers this week.

According to the report, Ledecky broke her own world record on Aug. 7 when she competed in 400m freestyle and won her first gold medal (which will award her with $25,000) in the Rio Olympics. In addition, she received a silver medal for another race, which will increase her net worth by $15,000.

"Ledecky has earned a total of $65,000 so far from the 2012 and 2016 Olympics under that program. Were it not for her amateur status, she could have cleaned up another $350,000 from swimming championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015, plus $3 to $4 million in pre tax endorsement dollars," Money Nation explained.

Last year, Bob Dorfman of Baker Street Advertising broke down her decision to go to college.

“She’ll be the top female swimmer going into Rio, the American poster girl, the woman most likely to bring home the most gold,” Dorfman told SF Gate. “And not turning pro could cost her around $3 million to $5 million in endorsement opportunities between now and Rio.”
