Tulsa 2024 Olympics: Oklahoma's City to Launch Bid for Summer Olympics with 'Native American Theme' [VIDEO]
Tulsa is being considered to host one of the world's largest athletic event in the future, the 2024 Olympic Games, according to a report Saturday.
Officials from Tulsa, the second-largest city in Oklahoma with about 400,000 residents, said that the city was among several small cities in the United States that received letters from the U.S. Olympic Committee to find out if it was interested in hosting the games, according to the Associated Press.
"Some people think of Tulsa as a flyover, Dust Bowl town," said Neil Mavis, a member of the Tulsa 2024 Olympic Exploratory Committee. "Many people think of cowboys and Indians. ... Bidding for the Olympics is the one way to change those stereotypes."
Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett reportedly told the USOC in a letter in March that the city would be interested in submitting a bid with a "Native American theme," reports Tulsaworld.com.
While Tulsa has until 2015 to submit a bid, officials and residents alike have speculated whether the city can host such a large event. So far the city has plans to hold events and host people in hotels in Tulsa and neighboring cities, according to NBC's local affiliate station KJRH TV.. AP reports that the Tulsa area has around 13,000 hotel rooms, but the requirement is 45,000 rooms.
Tulsa is among the 10 cities that are in talks with the USOC to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. While the committee has not officially disclosed the names of the cities, AP reports that Portland, Oregon and Memphis, Tennesse, are included.
The last time that the Summer Olympic games were hosted in the United States was in 1996 in Atlanta. New York was a candidate for the 2012 Games but lost to London and Chicago was a candidate for the 2016 Olympics but lost to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
