Huawei has announced two new Mate smartphones: The Mate 9 and the Porsche-designed Mate 9. The new smartphones are both similar to Samsung's leading smartphone Galaxy S7 Edge, but they have some notable differences.

Design Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is smaller, lighter and slimmer, and waterproof as well. Along with the Huawei Mate 9 smartphones, premium design features prevail, and both have front-mounted fingerprint sensors.

Display Comparison

The Huawei Mate 9 has a 5.9-inch full HD IPS LCD display. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display. Here, the advantage of AMOLED display is that it's brighter and thinner than IPS LCD display. Battery performance with Super AMOLED is also much better than IPS LCD display.

Operating System Comparison

Both smartphones have the same operating system - Android. However, the difference lies in the versions. The Mate 9 comes with Android 7.0 Nougat skinned with EMUI 5.0, and the S7 Edge comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow skinned with Touch Wiz UI.

Performance Comparison

Both smartphones have different processors - SoC-HI silicon Kirin 960 for Mate 9 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 for S7. Both, however, carry 4 GB worth of RAM.

Camera Comparison

The Mate 9 has a dual-lens setup, 20-megapixel + 12-megapizel with f/2.2 aperture size, which makes the phone capable of providing 2x optical zoom. On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 Edge has a 12-megapixel single-lens shooter and doesn't have optical zoom.

Battery Comparison

The Mate 9 has a non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery and the S7 has a non-removable Li-Ion 3600 mAh battery. In this particular case, the Mate 9 is clearly the top performer.

Price

The Porsche-designed Mate 9 costs EUR1395 and will be available in limited quantities, while the Galaxy S7 Edge starts at GBP639 and is widely available.

The Porsche-designed Mate 9 is scheduled to be released on January 2017, while the Galaxy S7 Edge has already been released in March 2016. From the detailed specifications, it's possible that the Mate 9 will be much better than Samsung's offering.
