Celebrities are often held in such high regard among both their fans and even some of their critics, making it all the more shocking when they become involved in a scandal and we're left questioning everything we think we know about them.

2016 was ripe with some major scandals rocking Hollywood, but there seven were by far among the most surprising (true or not):

"Becky With The Good Hair"

When Beyonce dropped Lemonade, two major questions were on everyone's mind after listening. First, people wanted to know if Jay-Z had really cheated on his wife. Then, determining he may have done so, they wanted to know who with. The only clue was the lyric about "Becky With The Good Hair," and everyone wanted to know who it was. The two most popular names thrown out were Rita Ora and Rachel Roy, though both denied they were the woman. Beyonce has never confirmed or revealed any identities.

Billy Bush and Donald Trump Video

After a video leaked during the Presidential race which led to a conversation between Bush and Donald Trump discussing women in a sexually demeaning way, Bush found his career torpedoed quickly. He was officially fired from The Today Show for his comments and laughter as Trump made lewd comments about Bush's former Entertainment Tonight co-host Nancy O'Dell and Days of Our Lives Star Arianne Zucker, as well as Trump's now infamous comment that he could "grab women by the p**sy." While the video rapidly destroyed Bush's career, Trump did not suffer a similar consequence. Despite numerous women then coming forward with allegations of sexual assault against him, he went on to win the Presidential Election and will be sworn in as President on Jan. 20.

Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian's Relationship

It was a roller coaster year for the Kardashian clan in general, and one of the biggest reasons was Rob Kardashian's relationship with Blac Chyna. Not long after he began dating his sister Kylie's boyfriend Tyga's ex, the two revealed they were engaged, and they even welcomed a daughter, Dream, in November. The relationship has been volatile at best however, with constant nasty fights and break-ups, including what appeared to be a faked one in December, where she moved out of Kardashian's home, and the two took the fight to Instagram and made things public. However, very quickly, every post about one another was deleted, and the two were also revealed to be back together. The timing coincidentally ran along their special on E! Documenting their daughter's birth, which made many question their validity.

Brad Pitt Abuse Allegations

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's divorce seemed shocking enough, but what followed was even more unexpected. Angelina Jolie filed for sole physical custody of their six kids and alleged that Brad Pitt was abusive to them, citing an incident with their eldest son, Maddox, on a flight from Paris back to the U.S. one week before she filed. A dual investigation was launched by both Child Protective Services, as well as the FBI, though by November, Pitt had been cleared of all allegations.

Johnny Depp Abuse Allegations

When Johnny Depp and Amber Heard announced their divorce, it came with some shocking allegations against Depp, following Heard filing a restraining order against her then-spouse. In her claim, he was abusive throughout their marriage, a claim that was repeatedly questioned, especially after his ex, Vanessa Paradis, whom he lived with for 14 years prior to meeting Heard, came to his defense. During the couple's settlement for the divorce, Heard dropped her claims.

Lochte Gate

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte was embroiled in scandal following his claims he was robbed at gunpoint during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. An investigation into the incident revealed Lochte and fellow swimmers Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger had actually been drunk and partially vandalized a gas station bathroom instead. The fallout led to fines for Lochte and Feigen, a 10 month suspension for Lochte and four month suspensions for the others. Lochte also found some of his major sponsors withdraw their support.

Taylor Swift's Image Comes Under Fire

Taylor Swift has been targeted for years over her penchant for writing songs about ex-boyfriends and enemies alike, but in 2016, her image was actually called into question by even some of her most loyal fans. First, her split with Calvin Harris led to questions about her after she was spotted not long after getting hot and heavy with Tom, Hiddleston. The drama continued with the reveal that she had written Harris' hit song "This Is What You Came For," something Harris felt was a personal attack against him.

The bigger drama however came from her reignited feud with Kanye West after he released his song "Famous," where he rapped about making having sex with "Taylor" and making that "B**ch" famous. Swift called out the lyric at the Grammy's, claiming she never knew he was going to sing that about her. Things hit a fever pitch over the summer when West's wife, Kim Kardashian, released a video which showed Swift and West discussing the song via a phone call-and Swift seeming to agree to the lyric about having sex, though she later defended herself, saying she wasn't aware he was going to call her a "b**ch." The drama still led to some questioning how Swift really operated behind the good-girl image she has tried to maintain.
