Blake Shelton had an emotional evening on Tuesday's showing of The Voice, as he remembered tragedies involving his family and hometown.

The country singer is coaching a pair of brothers on the singing competition and talked about the memory of his brother, who was killed in a car accident over 20 years ago. He hit it off with contestants Colton and Zach Swon due to their talent and their brotherly connection.

"They look up to him," said a source, referring to the mutual admiration between Shelton and the Swon brothers. "And Blake recognizes and admires the connection they share."

Shelton was 14 when his brother was killed in a car crash. He co-wrote Miranda Lambert's song Over You in memory of his brother.

The Oklahoma native performed the song with his wife on Tuesday's episode of The Voice as a tribute to victims in his home state that were affected by a tornado this week. The duo altered the lyrics of the song to say, "It really sinks in, you know, when it's so close to home."

Shelton tweeted on Monday:

Just landed in LA and hearing about all the tornados in Oklahoma right now... Get somewhere safe!!!

Following their performance, Shelton returned to his role as a coach. While three of his remaining contestants remain on the show, Shakira eliminated Kris Thomas, while Usher let Josiah Hawley go. Adam Levine still has three contestants remaining.
