NBA star Mookie Blaylock was in stable condition Friday after been critically injured the same day in a serious car accident that killed one person in Atlanta.

The star was in life support earlier, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jonesboro police Chief Franklin Allen told the Constitution that Blaylock's vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on a highway in Clayton County, Ga., resulting in a head-on collision with another vehicle where a couple were traveling. Two people in the other car were also reportedly transported to a hospital.

Blaylock was driving a Cadillac Escalade northbound on Tara Boulevard when for unknown reasons, he crossed over the median and into a southbound lane around 1 p.m., Allen said.

By Friday evening, Blaylock's condition had improved and he was removed from life support, but he remained in critical condition, Allen said.

Blaylock has been under treatment for seizures, a family member told police. It was not immediately known if his health condition contributed to the wreck or if Blaylock would face charges.

Monica Murphy, a passenger in the second vehicle, was bleeding internally and underwent surgery, Allen said. She was reportedly in critical condition late Friday.

Frankie Murphy, the third victim, reportedly didn't suffer serious injuries, according to police.

According to Allen, Blaylock had an outstanding warrant out of Spalding County on DUI and drug charges for failing to appear in court.

Blaylock, 46, played 13 seasons in the NBA, including seven seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, from 1992 to 1999. A two-time, first-team pick to the NBA's All-Defensive Team, Blaylock finished with career averages of 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game and appeared in the 1994 All-Star game.

Blaylock retired following the 2001-2002 season.
