Disney announces a new animated small-screen series, Star Wars Resistance, featuring characters voiced by stars Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie.

The latest Star Wars animated series will air in the upcoming fall, giving fans of the recently concluded Star Wars Rebels a new show to enjoy.

'Star Wars Resistance'

Star Wars Resistance follows a young pilot known as Kazuda Xiono, who is a Resistance recruit tasked to go on a secret mission as a spy on the rise of the terrifying First Order, according to the official release.

The timeline of this new animated show is set before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Fans of the franchise can expect high-flying adventures as well as the return of their favorite characters from the films including Isaac's Poe Dameron with Christie's Captain Phasma. Poe's trusty droid BB-8 will also be part of the animated series, joined by a roster of colorful and interesting characters that fleshes out the world prior to the events of The Force Awakens.

Star Wars Resistance is the brainchild of Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni who says his childhood fascination with war aircraft inspired him to create this new Star Wars television show.

"The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots" he explains, adding that his grandfather's experience as a pilot and his uncle's work in flying and restoring planes was a huge influence.

It's certainly a great perspective in the world of Star Wars, whose variety of aircraft and vehicles have always played a huge role in the narrative.

"There's a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we've captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time," Filoni continues.

Marc Buhaj of Disney XD praises the Lucasfilm team for coming up with a compelling story in an untold period of the franchise's existing universe.

"Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters," he says.

Other cast members include Christopher Sean, Jim Rash, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, Myrna Velasco, Rachel Butera, Josh Brener, Donald Faison, and Bobby Moynihan.

Star Wars Resistance will air in fall through Disney Channel in the United States. It will follow with a release on the new Disney XD.

'Star Wars' On TV

The more Star Wars, the better. Fortunately, Disney is ready and all too willing to provide.

There are plenty of films in the works, including Solo: A Star Wars Story, a Rian Johnson-helmed (Rogue One) trilogy, and a trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Washington Post reports.

Star Wars on television, however, is quickly catching up. Aside from Star Wars Resistance, the franchise have enlisted the help of longtime Disney collaborator Jon Favreau for a new Star Wars live action series.

Favreau, who was also a significant force in establishing Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe, will write and produce the series.

"If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn't have believed you," he states in the official release. "I can't wait to embark upon this exciting adventure."
