On Wednesday at 8 a.m., MTV will reveal the nominees for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, through videos on Instagram and Vine, according to Mashable.

The network recruited popular stop-animation creator Khoa Phan to produce the videos, which will air on the social media sites. The VMAs will be the first award ceremony to announce nominations through the video-sharing social media platforms, according to a spokesman for MTV. Every hour, the network will reveal the nominees for one of the several categories on Instagram and Vine as part of its #RoadToTheVMAs campaign.

The #RoadToTheVMAs hashtag was first used my MTV back in March to announce this year's new venue for the show: the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The network used photos of their Moonman trophy to show its journey from the Staples Center in Los Angeles--the site of the 2012 show--to the Barclays Center.

The social media experiment garnered MTV a quarter of a million Instagram likes, 16 million Twitter impressions, 8 million Facebook impressions and 1 million Tumblr impressions.

The 2013 VMAs will also include other innovations, including a newly redesigned Moonman trophy for this year's winners.

MTV has the distinction of being the first brand to reach 1 million followers on Instagram, when it accomplished the feat back in November 2012. The network now has 1.4 millions followers on Instagram and 117,000 followers on Vine.

MTV has worked with the 23-year-old Phan on pervious projects and referred to his work as "beautiful, compelling and highly sharable." Below are a few examples of Phan's work with Vine for the network:
