Horror film The Conjuring is looking to top the weekend box office, easily beating other new films, Red 2, R.I.P.D. and Turbo.

The Conjuring, which has become the rare horror film to earn rave reviews from critics, is looking to rake in up to $40 million in its first weekend of release. The film is based on a true story and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators exploring a haunted house filled with demons. It was Friday's No. 1 movie with $16.5 million.

A pair of sequels that have already been released are expected to take the No. 2 and 3 slots at the weekend box office. Animated sequel Despicable Me 2 made $7.5 million on Friday and is expected to make $24 million this weekend, coming in at No. 2. Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2 made $6.5 million Friday and is projected to come in at No. 3 with a gross of $20 million.

DreamWorks' latest animated film, Turbo, is expected to come in at No. 4 this weekend with a projected gross of $19 million. The film, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the film's titular character, made $6 million Friday.

Action sequel Red 2, which stars a multitude of veteran actors that include Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is projected to come in at No. 5. It made $6.2 million Friday, its first day of release, and is expected to make $18 million over the weekend.

Pacific Rim, which debuted last week at No. 3 with $37.3 million, is expected to drop to No. 6 this week with a projected weekend gross of $16 million. The action blockbuster made $4.8 million on Friday.

This weekend's final mainstream film debut is R.I.P.D., which is only expected to gross $12 million in its opening weekend. R.I.P.D. is Reynolds' other debut this week, and debuted with $4.8 million Friday.

The rest of the top 10 is expected to consist of buddy-cop comedy The Heat, animated prequel Monsters University and zombie blockbuster World War Z, each of which are expected to make under $10 million.
