Boycott Florida: Jay Z, Justin Timberlake & Rihanna Deny Concert Ban Over Stand Your Ground Law
Representatives for several recording artists denied the rumor that they will join Stevie Wonder in boycotting Florida until the state's Stand Your Ground law is dropped.
Reps for Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake denied that the two chart-topping artists will join Wonder and refrain from performing in the Sunshine State, The Huffington Post reported Tuesday. The pair is still scheduled to perform at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. on Aug. 16. The duo is currently on the road for their Legends of the Summer tour.
A rep for The Rolling Stones told Mother Jones that the legendary rock band are not joining the boycott and had never heard about Wonder's latest initiative.
An insider from Rihanna's camp also told the Post she will not be joining the boycott.
April D Ryan, a White House Ccrrespondent for American Urban Radio Networks, reported that sources affiliated with Wonder disclosed a list of celebrities who agreed to partake in the boycott in light of the George Zimmerman verdict.
Wonder announced on July 14 in Quebec City, Canada, that he will not perform in Florida until Stand Your Ground is abolished.
"As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world," Wonder told the crowd.
Wonder made the announcement the day after Zimmerman was found not guilty by a jury of six women in Seminole, Fla. on July 13. Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges for the February 2012 death of Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense, citing Florida's Stand Your Ground law. Legalized in 2005,the law states that a person may use deadly force in self- defense without the duty to retreat when faced with a reasonable perceived threat. It is approved in almost 30 states. Zimmerman's acquittal has since sparked dozens of protests around the country.
