Alec Baldwin may have been unintentionally involved in the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of "Rust."

According to Vanity Fair, a New Mexico District Attorney saw Baldwin's interview with ABC two months ago and was captivated to his assertion that he did not pull the shot that murdered Hutchins.

"You may draw the hammer back without really firing the trigger or locking it," attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies noted.

"So you pull it back a little bit, it doesn't lock, and if you let go, the firing pin might impact the primer of the bullet."

In the interview, the Hollywood actor insisted that the trigger was never pushed, stating, "I would never aim a gun at someone and pull the trigger at them, never."

Carmack-Altwies initiated her own unofficial inquiry to test the former "30 Rock" actor's allegations that he simply pulled back the hammer of the gun before it went off and then fired the live bullet that hit Hutchins in the chest and injured film director Joel Souza.

"I didn't know much about weapons, especially 1850s-era revolvers," the legal expert said. So when I first heard it, I said to myself, 'Oh, that's insane.'"

She also asked that one of her detectives bring his old-style gun to the office to see whether there was a technical problem that may allow the gun to fire.

They did, in fact, empty a room, and she had two detectives evaluate the rifle to ensure it wasn't loaded.

The hammer might have caused the live round to discharge, according to Carmack-Altwies' test, but official results from an FBI investigation of the pistol used at the scene are still pending.

While Alec Baldwin stated that he did not pull the trigger, a lawsuit filed in November by a "Rust" script supervisor alleged that the actor "intentionally" fired the gun at the cameraman.

On Tuesday, Hutchins' family filed a wrongful death claim against Baldwin, to which the actor responded with a social media post that featured a photo of an art installation with the words, "Everything is going to be okay."

Alec Baldwin is still battling the lawsuit filed against him and the makers of the "Rust" film, of which he is also a co-producer.
