It is always great to see a studio go back to their roots when it comes to creating a singular property, unfettered by a franchise, which can stand on its own creativity. Disney Animation Studios have done just that.

Today, they released their first trailer for Strange World, and this is unlike anything we've seen from the House of Mouse in a while.

The story revolves around Ethan Clade, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, a simple farmer who comes from a family of explorers that are transported - as is stated in the trailer - to a realm beyond space and time.

What follows is a spectacle of imaginative creature designs and landscapes which literally come to life around the Clades. Steeped in bold colors and sleek 3-D animation, this is a universe which needs to be seen to believe.

The official synopsis reads:

"Strange World journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest - and by far - most crucial mission."

Directed by Big Hero 6's Don Hall, and written and co-directed by Qui Nguyen - who co-wrote Raya and the Last Dragon - Strange World has the feels of the old pseudo-futuristic adventure films of yesteryear (Forbidden Planet and Fanstatic Planet, for example) with a trippy, almost fluid-like animation style for the titular Strange World and its inhabitants.

As a fan of non-musical animation - the opposite of Disney's bread and butter - it is always exciting to see them step outside of their comfort zone and green light projects such as this.

Strange World is now in preproduction and is expected to hit theaters on November 23, 2022.
