With the 2013 Video Music Awards approaching on Aug. 25, EnStars compiled a list of some of the past most memorable performances to date.

The late Michael Jackson hit the VMA stage in 1995 and performed a noteworthy set of some of his greatest hits. As he showed off his legendary dance moves, Jackson performed his tunes including The Way You Make Me Feel, Billie Jean and Dangerous. Slash also joined the singer on stage before the King of Pop received a standing ovation.

Another legend left people in awe with a certain VMA performance. Dressed in a wedding gown, Madonna performed her hit Like A Virgin in 1984. The star danced alone on stage but her raunchy performance was enough to shock the public.

Madonna re-enacted a similar act at the 2003 VMAs along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. It became one of the most talked about performances the show has ever had, thanks to the surprise kiss Madonna planted on Spears and Aguilera. Missy Elliot also joined the three ladies on stage.

Before her kiss with Madonna, Britney Spears also shocked the VMA audience when she ripped off a black suit at the 2000 award show and revealed a nude risqué outfit. After a rendition of Rolling Stones' I Can't Get No Satisfaction, the entertainer performed her hit Oops I Did It Again and showed off her impressive dance moves.

One year later the pop star did it again with her performance of I'm A Slave 4 U. Performing the song before it was even released, Spears once again stunned the crowd when she danced with a python, one of the largest snakes in the world.

Eminem, along with a whole bunch of look-a-likes, entered the VMAs in 2000 as the rapper performed The Real Slim Shady. Dressed in sweatpants and a tank top, the Detroit Native also performed his feisty track The Way I Am.

Beyonce was truly Sasha Fierce when she performed at the 2009 VMAs. The superstar opened the show with a slow version of Beautiful Nightmare and followed with her popular anthem Single Ladies. Joined by other female dancers, Beyonce worked the stage and proved her caliber as one of today's best performers.

Hip-hop and rock joined forces in 1999 when Run-DMC, Aerosmith and Kid Rock performed Walk This Way. Kid Rock and Aerosmith's lead singer Steven Tyler exchanged microphones and collaborated on the 1975 hit.

Two years before his death, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, sang his heart out during a performance of Lithium at the 1992 award show. The performance ended with Cobain tossing his guitar and stumbling on the drum set.

P. Diddy paid tribute to his late friend/rapper Notorious B.I.G. with a performance of I'll Be Missing You in 1997. He was joined on stage by B.I.G.'s ex-wife, Faith Evans and Sting, who sang the song's original version, I'll Be Watching You.
