An official cause of death and the exact circumstances leading up to it have not been disclosed as of this writing.

Tributes poured in for Stewart on X, formerly Twitter, after CNN broke the news of her passing.

Author and former White House aide Keith Boykin recalled their time working together at CNN and praised her as "always civil and respectful."

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who previously worked with Stewart for his 2016 GOP presidential campaign, remembered her as "wonderful and talented and a dear friend."

"She lived every day to the fullest, and she will be deeply missed," he wrote on X.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie also honored the political commentator, remembering her as a "wonderfully nice person."

"I am stunned and saddened by the news of Alice Stewart's passing. She was a political pro and a wonderfully nice person to just have a conversation with on any topic. I will miss Alice and will pray for her family," he wrote.

In his own tribute for his "dear colleague Alice Stewart," CNN anchor Jim Acosta wrote that his "heart is broken" over her death.

"We've been friends going back to the 2012 campaign. We spent so many weekends talking politics with the wonderful @MariaTCardona -- they always spoke so passionately but with kindness and civility. Alice was my friend and I loved her. RIP," he tweeted.

CNN host Jake Tapper also mourned Stewart's death, writing: "Horrible news about our beloved and gifted commentator Alice Stewart. Just awful. We are all gutted."

"The View" co-host and CNN commentator Ana Navarro-Cárdenas expressed her sadness over the heartbreaking news on X.

"Alice was kind, decent, hard-working and a woman whose faith sustained her. She was a breath of fresh air -always professional- at a time when lack of decorum and civility reign in political discussions. May she rest in peace," Navarro-Cárdenas wrote.

Stewart's career as a journalist began as a local reporter and producer in Georgia, according to CNN.

She worked for then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's office as communications director -- a role she also took on when he ran for president in 2008.

She also held the same position in the presidential campaigns of former Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Stewart had joined CNN as a political commentator before the 2016 election.

Her last appearance on the network came Friday on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

In addition to her work at CNN, she co-hosted the podcast "Hot Mics from Left to Right."
