Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke hit the stage together at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night.

In an unlikely duet, the pair performed Thicke's recent controversial hit Blurred Lines.

As Cyrus descended from a giant teddy bear wearing a silver leotard, the former Disney Channel star stuck out her tongue before taking her place amongst a plethora of dancing, life-sized bears.

The pop star sang the opening section of the popular song before Thicke walked onto stage in a black and white striped suit. Together the duo traded off vocals while Cyrus striped down into a tan bikini, twerking and grinding around her partner.

The surprises kept coming throughout the performance. Surrounded by an impressive number of backup dancers, Thicke stood still in the midst of the performers, singing into a gold mic as two rappers came out to join the onstage party.

Nominated for three awards, Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines featuring T.I. and Pharrell was in the running for Video of the Year, Best Male Video, and Best Collaboration. Cyrus' We Can't Stop was nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Female Video.

Thicke first dropped Blurred Lines back in March in anticipation of his July album baring the same name. The song climbed the charts, hitting No. 1 around the world and quickly going multi-platinum .

While the 20-year-old Cyrus has not released a studio album since 2010's Can't Be Tamed, the singer is currently gearing up for her October debut of Bangerz.
