Christina Aguilera addressed the reason for her heated exchanges with fellow Voice mentor Adam Levine during seasons 1 through 3.

She explained that they're both " very passionate" when it comes competing for the best contestants to help win the season.

"It isn't personal with Adam. It never has been," Aguilera told FOX News. "We're just very strong personalities."

Aguilera is returning to The Voice after a one season hiatus. She went on a temporary leave last year to resume her singing career.

She released her seventh album, Lotus in November, 2012 and had success with a hit single, Feel This Moment, a duet with Miami rapper Pitbull. The Dirrty singer also had success in her personal life with a recent weight loss. She is returning to the hit competition show reportedly 30 pounds lighter.

The petite pop singer shocked her fans this week when she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday. She wore a black skintight mini-dress that showed off her slim frame and the 32-year-old told Leno she feels "sexier than ever!"

Cee-Lo Green also sat out one season of The Voice to resume his music careers. Green and Aguilera were replaced by Shakira and Usher for season 4. Shakira and Usher will return to The Voice for season 6 when it premieres in the spring of 2014.

Levine's contestant, Javier Colon, won season 1 and Blake Shelton won The Voice for the third year in a row in season 4. Shelton's country act, 16-year-old Danielle Bradbery, became the youngest winner in the show's history. He also won season 3 with his act Cassadee Pope and Season 2 with Jermaine Paul.

The two-part season 5 premiere of The Voice will air on Monday Sept. 23 and Tuesday Sept, 24 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
