Hilary Duff and her husband Mike Comrie have decided to call it quits after three years of marriage.

Duff's rep confirmed the news with People magazine Friday and said the two, who have been married since 2010, "have mutually decided [upon] an amicable separation. They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."

A source who is close to Duff did say that while there was no huge issue between the two, they tried their best to work out their differences, but were unfortunately unable to.

"They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time," they revealed. "They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends," the source said.

It seems as if the decision was Duff's in the end, but not a "rash" one at all.

The source went on to say, "It's something [Hilary] thought through. She really does care about him and he really does care about her."

The two are parents to Luca Cruz Comrie, who was born on Mar. 20, 2012. After giving birth, Duff tweeted, "He is surrounded by so much love!! Mom and baby are both doing extremely well."

There's no doubt the two will be able to co-parent together successfully. Duff told People in October that Comrie "is an amazing father. He's so patient and loving and involved. He's all the things that I knew that he would be."
