Joss Whedon is taking a lesson from Francis Ford Coppola while crafting next year's The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As the Firefly creator delves into the world of sequels, he is faced once more with a problem that undoubtedly plagued him during Serenity - how do you tell a new story without alienating viewers who did not see the original installment?

For Whedon, the puzzle becomes even more complicated when you add in references to the events of Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

"The model I'm always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is The Godfather: Part II where a ton has happened in-between and it's a very different movie [from Part I], but you don't need any information," Whedon explained to Allocine. "It's there in the film about what's happened since, what's different, and why is this a different film; why is it a different kind of structure, and why is it darker. It's all there, you're in the vernacular of the first movie and you're just ready to pick up in this new place, and hopefully that's what will happen with my movie."

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige has indicated that Captain America: The Winter Solider will be the major unifying for between 2012's Avengers and the 2015 release, according to the Reviewer. Featuring Caps (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and a little strife with Nick Fury's (Samuel L Jackson) SHIELD, the April film should top viewers' lists if they are not planning on seeing any other Marvel film in between the two ensemble films.
