Guardians of the Galaxy is still six-months out, but director James Gunn is touting the stellar film as one of Marvel's biggest productions yet.

One of Marvel's Phase Two films, Guardians is the first piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that does not feature a member of the Avengers. Although a lesser-known brand than Iron Man, Thor, or Captain America, the space-based Guardians will provide epic sets and an intriguing cast of characters.

"Our characters are basically all villains to begin with. If The Avengers are The Beatles, the Guardians are The Rolling Stones," Gunn explained to Empire, echoing actress Zoe Saldana's previous declaration that Guardians is an "antihero hero movie."

Staring as Gamora, Saldana joins the eccentric band of Peter Quill, aka the Star-Load (Chris Pratt). Also in Quill's group are Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), the bomb-happy Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper - voice) and a sentient tree named Groot (Vin Diesel - voice).

"There's a lot of strange stuff in the movie," Gunn admitted to Empire. "But I think the thing that makes it different from the rest of the other superhero movies out there is that they try and take something seriously that really can't be taken seriously because the concept is just too fun at its core."

In addition, the film will have impressive sets to match its colorful characters. Filmed with a "pulpy '50s feel," Guardians will include a prison set that is 350 thousand pounds of steel and various other expansive sets to keep a healthy mix between real life and CGI.

"Visually, [it's] the biggest movie Marvel has made, because of the big, big starscapes and big action sequences," Gunn told Empire.

Guardians of the Galaxy won't hit theaters until Aug. 1, but fans can currently enjoy the film's mid-credit scene from Thor: The Dark World.
