Chapo Guzman, known as Mexico's most powerful drug cartel leader, apparently managed to not get caught because of his high-tech gadgetry.

Chapo Guzman's Daughter Taken By Police?

On Wednesday, The Associated Press reported that a top associate was supposedly using a cell phone, which led authorities to point to a wiretap in Arizona. Guzman was then captured within a day in a condominium in Mazatlan, Mexico.

It appears that Guzman was using communications equipment that were not available to consumers. According to the report, Guzman employed countersurveillance scanners to detect transmitters that were carried by the people he was meeting, which were also hidden in rooms.

Chapo Guzman's Wife Missing?

"It was top-notch," a law enforcement said.

It looks like there was also a wiretap that was monitored in Arizona. This supposedly directed Mexican marines to the condominium where Guzman had been hiding.

According to the law enforcement official, Guzman was able to move freely with the help of his own security force.

"He moved for the most part with impunity (in Culiacan)," the official said. "He traveled at will. He had private planes. He was a businessman and he would go and meet people to discuss not just the drug trade. He was obviously interested in the money trade, the markets. He was looking at expanding the empire."

There is a high chance that the drug lord amassed billions of dollars by the time he was captured. His empire was so large, it ranged from Canada through Latin America, Australia, Europe and even parts of Asia.
