While True Detective writer Nic Pizzolatto is still in the process of figuring out season 2 of the HBO series, fans are busy speculating about what the new cast and concept will be.

Matthew McConaughey Talks Season 2 Return Possibilities

True Detective season 1 ended Sunday night on HBO, giving viewers their last look at Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson). In season 2, the anthology series will feature an entirely new cast, setting and story, and Pizzolatto has only revealed a few details about it.

When asked by Buzzfeed about what other long-term stories he could write for season 2, he was quick to answer.

True Detective Season 2: Plans In Place For 'Hard Women,' 'Bad Men' & Occult Themes?

"Oh, all kinds of conspiracies suggest themselves," he said. "Especially if, like me, you've been reading about the last 40 years of Southern California government."

He also discussed a tweet he recently deleted discussing True Detective's lack of strong female characters and how it would change in season 2.

"I deleted the tweet because I didn't want to be beholden to a promise and then change my mind," he explained. "I'm writing Season 2 right now, but I don't want to divulge any potentialities, because so much could change. I just never want to create from a place of critical placation - that's a dead zone. So I don't want, for instance, a gender-bias-critique to influence what I do."

Pizzolatto has already told multiple publications that season 2 will center on "hard women," "bad men" and the U.S. transportation system and its occult history.

Fans who want more Cohle and Hart don't have to give up hope just yet. Pizzolatto revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he has the rights to both characters, which could be used for other projects, potentially.

"Maybe you will see Cohle and Hart novels down the road after Hollywood kicks me out," he quipped. "Always a possibility."

True Detective has not yet been renewed for season 2.
