Despite potential reassurances that the titular character of How I Met Your Mother wouldn't die in the series finale, photos released by CBS seem to indicate a possible scenario where Ted eventually ends up with another woman -- Robin.

Robin's Dad Hints Final Episode 'Will Be Resolved Beautifully'

Rumors have long been swirling that the mother would die sometime before the year 2030, when Ted tells his children the story of how he met their mother. However, photos released by CBS promoting the series finale, titled Last Forever, could indicate that at some point, Ted and Robin will have a romantic reunion.

The photos show a mix of present-day photos on the day of Barney and Robin's wedding, as well photos of the gang as they get older. Though Ted did eventually marry the mother of his children, one wedding that may not have happened as initially planned is Barney and Robin's, as neither one is pictured wearing a wedding ring. Both characters' left hands are hidden in each photo, though one does give a slight glimpse at Barney's ring finger, which appears to be bare.

Episode Hints At Mother's Death?

Another photo that could be telling shows a later meeting between Ted and Robin at a cafe. Robin is sitting alone at a table, with her hands hidden underneath it, as Ted stands nearby. The characters are clearly older, and Ted is wearing his wedding ring. However, the ring could still be in place after his wife's death. If he and Robin meet up again and find themselves attracted to one another, it could be yet another twist fans weren't expecting for the show's final episode.

Cristin Milioti, who plays the mother and previously called fan theories about her character dying "crazy," appears to have since reversed her feelings, calling the finale during a spoiler chat with E! "sad."

"I cried. It was so amazing to see this group of people and this thing that has been their lives for nine years," she said. "It was amazing to be apart of it and I'm very sad and I didn't want it to end. I could've gone another two years."

How I Met Your Mother airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
