The incredibly shy Amber Laign, 39, wouldn't come out on Ellen when her bold girlfriend Robin Roberts, 53, taped the show - but she did share a sweet shot.

"That was my birthday," said Roberts of the photo of her and a smiling Laign. "She photographed much better in this picture than I did but I said, you know what, I'm gonna use this picture because you look so doggone good and I'm like heehee," Roberts laughed according to Monday's USA Today.

The two met on a blind date "almost nine years ago," but they don't live together.

"I guess it would be hard because you wake up at 3 a.m. every day and I wouldn't want to wake up to that either but ..." said DeGeneres of the Good Morning America host.

Of her private girlfriend, Roberts said: "She doesn't really like the spotlight. Like, she's here right now. I can't get her to come out,"

Ellen couldn't resist, "Well she came out, but anyway. It's too late for that now."

This interview must have been especially satisfying for Ellen, who had her famous coming out moment with "I'm Gay" covers splashed across magazines in 1997.

Roberts, who recently came out on Facebook, continued, "not everyone wants to be in the spotlight. She's very, very supportive and she's been right there beside me every step of the way."

As most know, Roberts was diagnosed myelodysplastic syndrome, a severe blood and marrow disease. Doctors gave her two years to live. It was Laign's constant care that truly saved her. Roberts came out on Facebook by thanking her long term girlfriend:

"I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and her friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together."

She went out to say later, "Even though Amber is someone who shies away from the spotlight, it was important for me to let people know I have this person in my life," as noted in an earlier Enstars report.

On Ellen, Roberts was in good spirits, saying she feels "strong like bull." She added, "I have never been this happy nor healthy in such a long time."
