HBO's prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire will be entering it's fifth and final season this fall. With the show's close come the questions of who will live, die, triumph, and, in this case, direct?

New Character Added to Boardwalk Empire's Last Season

The series, created by Terry Winter, kicked off season one with a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street), who also produces the show. The big-budget premiere was noted for Scorsese's direction, which lended itself to the tone of the program.

When Winter first learned that Scorsese was set to direct the pilot, he was shocked. "I couldn't believe it," he said in a 2013 interview looking back on the series, "I didn't think it was going to happen." He and his fellow producer felt "like little kids" getting to work with a dream director.

HBO is known for working with the same directors and writers throughout a series, creators often write and direct premieres and finales. Scorsese, however, has not directed an episode since the first episode of the series.

With a show like Boardwalk Empire, where internal and social significance is built through the rhythm of the narrative, bringing Scorsese back could be a smooth way to bring the series to a close. However, the famed director has not commented on whether or not he will return.

"He [Scorsese]" said Winter, "Really created the look of the show."

The first episode of the show aired September 19, 2010. It will come to a close in Fall 2014.
