Penny Dreadful doesn't return to Showtime until next year, but that hasn't stopped the speculation as to which literary characters will play a part in the Victorian drama's second season.

Creator John Logan Promises 'New Friends' Are Coming To Penny Dreadful

The series has already established title characters from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) and Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray (1891) as leading characters, as well as a number of individuals from Dracula (1897).

While it's possible creator John Logan could look to new source material for season two additions, his tendency to draw multiple characters from the same narrative suggest he might be looking to Bram Stoker, Wilde and Shelley for new inspiration.

Dorian Gray Gets New Love Interest For Penny Dreadful Season 2

While Dracula was by far Stoker's most popular novel, The Lady of The Shroud was published a few years later in 1909. This novel follows young Rupert Sent Leger who attempts to utilize his newly inherited money to do good in the world. It's possible Logan could look to incorporate the good-intentioned Leger into his dark supernatural world.

Logan has also noted an interest in bringing the writing of H.G. Wells into the world of Penny Dreadful (featured below). Perhaps he will take the suicidal Mr. Polly from The History of Mr. Polly (1910) or the independent leading lady from Ann Veronica (1909), a novel which was banned upon its release because of its progressive views.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
