Legendary actor Robin Williams committed suicide by hanging, authorities confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Lt. Keith Boyd told reporters that Williams' personal assistant found his body around 11:45 a.m. on Monday after he didn't respond to her knocks on his bedroom door. Rigor mortis had set in at that time. "The caller was distraught," he said.

Boyd explained that the 63-year-old actor was found "clothed in a seated position, unresponsive, with a belt secured around his neck, with the other end of the belt wedged between the closed closet door and the door frame."

He also revealed that the actor had several cuts on the inside of his left wrist. A "pocket knife with a closed blade" was also found close to his body with a red substance on it. Further tests will confirm whether or not it was his blood.

Williams was last seen by his wife at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, right before she went to bed. His wife, Susan Schneider, left their home at 10:30 a.m. the following morning and Williams appeared to be asleep.

Forensic examination confirmed that Williams' "life ended from asphyxia due to hanging." Toxicology testing will also be conducted to see if any chemical substances were present in his system prior to his death.

After Williams' death, his rep released a statement which revealed that the actor was "battling severe depression."
