Despite the show ending its nine-year run five months ago with an ending that polarized fans of the series, the official alternate ending for How I Met Your Mother that leaked online has restored fans' faith in the show.

The 'HIMYM" Series Finale Backlash--Fans React To Polarizing End

The show ended in March with a finale that greatly disappointed fans by killing off the titular Mother character (Christine Milioti) and having the protagonist/narrator Ted (Josh Radnor) going to be with his former flame, Robin (Colbie Smulders). The ending enraged fans, who expected that after nine seasons of build-up, they would see more than a small glimpse into the life that Ted actually shared with the love of his life-forcing the cast and show creators to defend the decision.

After the uproar, series co-creator Carter Bays defended the decision, while also revealing a second ending had been filmed-but he and Craig Thomas ultimately decided to go with the one they chose.

Josh Radnor 'Knew' How 'HIMYM' Would End Since Season One?

"16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," he tweeted at the time. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too." However, the official alternate ending was leaked online just weeks before it was set to be officially released on the HIMYM series box set-and fans who have seen the video (which FOX has been actively trying to block it from Youtube and other video sharing sites) are not only rejoicing that the alternate ending has been released, but are expressing more outrage that the creators chose to use the radically different version they did.

The video can be seen below, and the DVD box set will be available on September 23.
