DeGeneres opened up on Thursday the conversation by catching up on things she had missed to her on summer vacation. She called Rivers a "pioneer" and said that despite her age, she left "too soon." Williams had been on DeGeneres' talk show numerous times over the years.

"Every time he was here, he made me laugh so hard," she said. "He was really one of a kind and I'm thankful that I got to call him a friend."

DeGeneres then showed clips from Williams' many appearances on the talk show.

Before that, DeGeneres had been talking about her summer with her wife de Rossi. Last week during her monologue, DeGeneres talked about the split rumors between her and de Rossi that had made news during this past summer. "I had a great summer," DeGeneres said. "I went on a trip with Portia, my beautiful wife." The camera then panned to the audience where de Rossi was sitting.

DeGeneres continued about Portia, "who I am happily married to, but thank you for your heartfelt concern, tabloids."

DeGeneres had revealed the two had gone on a European vacation and were happier than ever as a couple.
