According to recent reports Annabelle has trumped the much-hyped Ben Affleck starrer Gone Girl -- which opened the same week as the prequel to The Conjuring -- at the box office.

On opening night Annabelle took away $15.5 million vs. the $13.2 for Gone Girl, Forbes reported. In fact what makes this striking is the fact that it took $60 million to make Gone Girl and only $7million to make Annabelle. So the press has generally been baffled by the indie-horror flick's success which didn't boast of star cast like Gone Girl.

But while Annabelle might have made the big bucks, it didn't impress the critics.

Some of the verdicts for Annabelle are in and the movie doesn't seem to have impresses the critics as much, and is being accused of using trite scare tactics, which are old tricks in the book of horrors. Recently Enstars rounded up some of the reviews to give fans an idea of how the film has fared with critics.

Annabelle is directed by John R. Leonetti and stars Annabelle Wallis as Mia Gordon, Ward Horton as Join Gordon, Alfre Woodard as Evelyn, Eric Laden as Detective Clarkin, Brian Howe as Pete Higgins and Tony Amendola as Father Perez.

The movie is set for release on October 3.
