The engineer suffered brain hypoxia/anoxia courtesy of his trip to the bottom of the ocean, and the lack of oxygen left genius off his game in season 2. Luckily for Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), there might be away for him to regain his normal brain function, although it won't be easy.

The memory machine introduced in "The Writing on the Wall" helped Coulson (Clark Gregg) gain his memories and drop his crazy behavior, and Gregg believes Coulson could consider using it on Fitz.

"That machine is so painful and I don't wish it on anybody, but if there's anything to be done to get Fitz back to his former intellectual glory, I think Coulson would risk anything," Gregg told Entertainment Weekly.

Knowing how beleaguered and sidelined Fitz currently feels, there is a high chance he would accept the offer.
