Maria Jose Alvarado, who was named Miss Honduras 2014, and her sister were found dead almost a week after their disappearance.

The Associated Press reported that Alvarado, 19, and Sofia Trinidad, 23, were last seen leaving a party in Santa Barbara, Honduras on Nov. 13. The police found their bodies buried in a field near La Aguagua spa where they were celebrating the birthday of Trinidad’s boyfriend.

Police said the main suspect is the boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, 26, whose pickup truck was seized along with guns. Aris Maldonado is also being detained as an accomplice.

Gen. Ramon Sabillon said the boyfriend shot Trinidad during a violent argument which started after he saw her dancing with another man. He then shot Alvarado while she tried to get away.

The mother of the two women,Teresa Munoz, told the police to investigate the boyfriend because they had gone to the party with him. Ruiz reportedly called Munoz the morning after the party acting strangely and saying her daughters left the party with other people.

“Honduras has been designated as the murder capital of the world. It has the highest murder rate per capita in the world,” BBC's William Marquez said. “But even in a society imbued in such violence, I think this is going to come as a shock because the nation invests a lot in their beauty queens. Regardless of what you think about beauty pageants, there is a sense of national pride if the beauty queen does well in the pageants.”

Alvarado, who was still in school, was already packed to fly out to London to compete in the Miss World Pageant.
