While the pre-production for Transformers 5 is in a state of flux, the rumor mills have been working overtime speculating about the plot and star cast for the sequel to Age of Extinction.

Quintessons To Be The Prime Villains In Transformers 5?

The latest reports suggest that the possibility of a G.I. Joe crossover with the series is a strong possibility, and will star Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis.

The Inquisitor came out with the report revealing that the Willis and Johnson would most likely helm the project, if it were to take place. The sequel to Age of Extinction will be crossed over with G.I. Joe.

Michael Bay Officially Drops Transformers 5 As He Signs On New Paramount Movie

Another take on the plot of the movie hints at a beast wars themed story with Optimus Prime off looking for his maker in space, while the Maximals fight the Predacons one earth.

What's thrown the production of the movie into a state of limbo is director Michael Bay recently ditching the franchise. On August 11, IndieWire reported that Bay had hinted at the fact that he might not be as keen on directing the sequel to Age of Extinction. The revelation came from an MTV interview, the director did just after wrapping work on Transformers 4. "There's a lot that's unexplored, but that's for the next director to figure out," he said. Bay had previously stated that if he sticks with the franchise the new movie will be probably be as long as Age of Extinction.

There is also no news on whether Age of Extinction stars Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor will be returning.

The release date for the movie was initially suggested for some time in 2016, but some recent interviews with producers of the franchise stated that there is no confirmation on that and it might even be a "little rushed."

Now coming to the plot. As Optimus Prime was seen traveling into space, headed to Cybertron to meet his maker at the end of Age of Extinction, many believed that the sequel would be set in Cybertron and there were a lot of theories being suggested to corroborate that. But in a recent interview, producer Lorenzo de Bonaventura revealed that it was more likely that the saga will continue to unfold on mortal land and there were no plans to set it in space. In fact Bonaventura also stated that the setting for Transformers 5 will be very similar to that of Age of Extinction.

There have also been some other pretty tempting rumors doing the rounds about Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox returning to the franchise with Transformers 5, but while both mildly welcomed the idea in recent interviews, it seems highly unlikely that such a thing would happen as Age of Extinction marked a complete overhaul with cast for the franchise and announced its new phase.

There are also a bunch of characters that are expected to return. There were predictions about Lockdown being resuscitated as has been the case with other machines in the movie's past -- Megatron came back to life in his new avatar as Galvatron. In fact some reports have hinted that a new version of Megatron or Galvatron will be making a massive comeback with Transformers 5. But the most excitingly scary prediction so far has been that Optimus Prime might die in the sequel and Rodimus will take over.

Transformers: Age of Extinction hit theaters on June 27, 2014.
