After the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, we have all come to love the team of Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket but in a recent interview, James Gunn says that a shift in teammates could happen in future installments of the franchise.

'Guardians 2' Director Very Clear That The Movie Will Not Have This Fan-Favorite Character

While speaking to Cinema Blend on Tuesday, Gunn talked about what the team will look like in the sequel and if there are any chances of major shifts happening between who is on the team and who isn't.

"Definitely. It's not a concrete roster where those five people will always be the Guardians of the Galaxy," he said. "Some of those people can leave and do other things; other characters can join in and be new additions. Definitely it will not stay the same - into the next movie."

Is Star-Lord's Father Already In The Marvel Universe?

The site adds that while there are many characters that could wind up joining the Guardians of the Galaxy - including Adam Warlock, Angela, Moondragon and more - it's hard not to wonder how exactly Gunn and the folks at Marvel would go about axing one of the established core members of the team.

This does make sense as Gunn has previously stated that he wants to expand the universe around them and introduce new faces, but it probably wouldn't be the best move for the franchise to go switching out too many of the key players from the first movie as everyone has attached to them already.

While this could work with the Avengers, they are also coming from a much broader pool where you can add heroes that people know and won't completely throw them off.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to open in theaters on May 5, 2017.
