New Rumor & Casting Call Could Signal Production On Third 'Divergent' Movie Is Starting This Month

Variety reported on Friday that Robert Schwentke, who directed Insurgent, will be returning to the franchise to direct the third movie, Allegiant: Part 1. There was no word whether that meant he would be back for Part 2 as well.

Schwentke joined the franchise after directing RED and R.I.P.D. and previous director Neil Burger left due to the compressed schedule. The film recently concluded production in Atlanta and is now in post-production.

First Full-Length Trailer For 'Insurgent' Could Be Coming Next Year With 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

According to the site, Lionsgate decided in April to make two films from Allegiant, the final book in Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, following the same strategy it used for the Twilight and Hunger Games franchises.

The story is set in a dystopian world in which people are divided into five separate factions and those who are "Divergent" are hunted and killed by the ruthless leaders of the Erudite faction. After the rising conflicts in Insurgent, Shailene Woodley's character faces impossible choices about courage, allegiance and love.

The site added that Noah Oppenheim, whose credits include Maze Runner, is writing the script. That young-adult movie went on to be a surprise hit this fall and is expected to garner two more films, with their finale not being split.

Woodley and Theo James will return in both films with Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Zoe Kravitz. The film just released a new still and is expected to have a new trailer out later this week.

Insurgent comes out March 20, 2015 and Allegiant: Part 1 is out on March 18, 2016.
