When asked to talk a bit about how film directors are doing a lot more television work, his repsonse was that the industry is less about feature films and more about "short stories on interesting characters" that generate more money and cost less than films.

"Feature films are gravitating elsewhere. You're making spectacles," he said, "There's too much money on the table and there are higher stakes [in featured films]."

He said these longer series of television rather than 90 minute films are giving him an opportunity to delve into characters more and "that's why he is doing television more."

When talking about the difference between State of Affairs and his other show Blacklist, he said: "For me, creatively, State of Affairs has evolutionized compared to Blacklist because it has been hugely educational because I took what I learned on Blacklist and applied it to State of Affairs."

NBC's State of Affairs stars Katherin Heigl and airs on Monday's on NBC.
