Jon Hamm is best known for playing the suave but troubled Don Draper on AMC's 1960s drama Mad Men, but it turns out the actor was almost cast in a very different kind of historical drama.

As it turns out, the American actor recently confirmed that a story claiming he auditioned for the BBC's The Tudors was "100 percent true."

"I went to an audition for The Tudors and they thought I was John Hannah," Hamm told the Daily Mail.

Hannah, who's played in films like The Hurricane with Denzel Washington and Sliding Doors with Gwenyth Paltrow, is not only older than Hamm, he is also Scottish.

"I'm not Scottish. I'm not 50," noted Hamm. "I'm also not eligible to work in the UK. But I did learn a bunch of lines and practiced the accent."

After learning of the mix-up, Hamm was asked if he still wanted to go through with the audition he'd been preparing for. "I said 'No, because there's no point in it. I'm, not going to get the job'," explained the AMC star.

Fortunately for audiences, Hamm did audition for Mad Men and he did get the part. As the iconic Draper, the actor has scored multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, as well as acclaim from both critics and audiences. His film credits include the comedy Bridesmaids, and dramas such as The Town and Million Dollar Arm.

Mad Men returns on AMC for the remainder of its seventh and final season in the spring of 2015.
