The first season of True Detective sparked a media frenzy this year, but the popular HBO drama might not be as big as everyone thought.

New Storyline Could Hurt 'True Detective' Season 2

The show's first season was helmed by big stars and received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Fans flocked to speculate about casting for season 2 this year, eager to share their opinions.

With all this attention one might assume that the program pretty much set Twitter on fire, but it didn't.

Find Out What 'True Detective' & 'Game Of Thrones' Have In Common

On Monday The Hollywood Reporter examined the most tweeted about shows on television and it looks like True Detective didn't make the cut.

The Walking Dead (AMC) led the pack in 2014 with about 576,000 tweets per episode, with Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) coming in at no. 2 with 489,000 tweets per episode.

Other programs included on the list were The Bachelor (ABC) and Game of Thrones (HBO).

True Detective's omission could have something to do with the nature of the data retrieval. It seems that tweets were only counted during the airing of each new episode, not overall. It then begs the question whether or not True Detective would have dominated the list as one of the top-trending of the year.

Production for the program's second season is already underway and will star Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch. The story is set to surround the events following the murder of a city manager in California.

True Detective returns on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
