The partnership between Rust Cohle and Marty Hart helped True Detective thrive in 2014, but it's uncertain whether the new season will share that bond.

'True Detective' Might Not Translate Overseas

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson played compellingly off each other as Rust and Marty, but with a larger cast for season 2 it's uncertain whether or not HBO with maintain that sense of companionship.

So far it seems like Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn might have a few scenes together, if not more. Vaughn will play career criminal Frank Semyon, while Farrell is set to play Detective Ray Velcoro, who has some questionable connections to the mob. His past could tie him to Semyon, which could make for an interesting pairing.

Find Out Who Will Be True Detective's Next Breakout Star

On Oct. 15 Farrell told Irish Central that he was planning to meet-up with Vaughn before production began. As the two had never met before, the actor considered some familiarity to be a good idea. Is this because they will be sharing screen-time? Could any pairing match the level of fame reached by Rust and Marty?

The second season of True Detective will explore the events following the murder of a city manager in California with a cast helmed by Vaughn, Farrell, Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides), and Taylor Kitsch (Officer Paul Woodrugh). Production is currently underway, with creator Nic Pizzolatto penning all the episodes.

True Detective returns on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
