Showtime released an all new trailer for Penny Dreadful this week.

Someone Is 'Up To No Good' On 'Penny Dreadful

Over the last few weeks the network has teased fans with brief previews, but this two-minute trailer is the most detailed one to be released so far.

"When Lucifer fell, he did not fall alone," warns a tortured Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who is shown throughout the trailer visiting the countryside and mourning at Mina's grave (Olivia Llewellyn).

Vanessa & Ethan Might Be Teaming Up With Sembene On 'Penny Dreadful'

"Do you believe the past can return?" she asks at the start of the trailer.

"More than that," replies a dark, mysterious voice. "It never leaves us."

In addition to Vanessa's suffering, the trailer also reveals Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) looking at a photograph of Vanessa, who turned him down in season 1, and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) praying in an unusual ceremony. There are also images which show that Caliban (Rory Kinnear) might find love with a woman he will meet this season.

Most telling in the trailer, however, is perhaps the scene which shows Madame Kali (Helen McCrory) bathing in a tub of blood. This is obviously a reference to Elizabeth Bathory, one of the three central figures on whom Dracula was based. The Hungarian Bathory murdered women in the 1500s and bathed in their blood under the believe that it would keep her young. It would seem then that show's human villain for season 2 will be rooted in some very real history.

In addition to the new trailer, the series also received an official premiere date this week.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season on April 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
